Between 24 and 31 May, the 4th edition of the Let’s Travel Together took place, an initiative led by Diaverum Portugal in partnership with APIR, the Portuguese Association of Renal Patient.

Let’s Travel Together was created from the belief that chronic kidney disease should not be a barrier to social participation, leisure, or discovering new places. However, for many people undergoing haemodialysis, travelling remains a challenge often associated with concerns, logistical limitations, and the need to ensure continuity of treatment.

This year, Amarante was chosen as the destination, welcoming a group of participants from across the country, accompanied by family members and caregivers. Over the course of a week, they had the opportunity to discover some of the region’s most iconic locations, enjoy moments of togetherness, and create memories that will last well beyond the journey itself.

It is precisely to address these concerns that this programme was developed. Throughout the week, haemodialysis treatments were provided by the Diaverum Amarante team, allowing participants to enjoy the experience with confidence, knowing they had access to specialised, high-quality care.

However, the true impact of this initiative goes far beyond the trip itself. For many participants, it represents an opportunity to rediscover a sense of freedom, confidence, and connection with others.

“Let’s Travel Together allows us to feel less alone. It is a unique opportunity to share memories, create new friendships, and feel that we are truly living.” - Participating haemodialysis patient

By bringing together participants from different parts of the country, the programme creates opportunities for sharing, strengthens support networks, and demonstrates that it is possible to continue travelling, discovering, and experiencing new things, even in the face of the challenges posed by kidney disease.

The experience is equally meaningful for family members and caregivers, who find in this setting a sense of calm and togetherness that is often difficult to achieve in everyday life.

“For me, as a family member, this trip allows me to truly relax and, above all, enjoy such a special journey with my husband and our friends. It is an opportunity to experience moments of normality that so often take a back seat.”- Participating family member

Throughout this edition, participants visited several places of interest in Amarante and the surrounding areas, sharing moments of friendship, connection, and discovery. Through conversations, excursions, and cultural experiences, new bonds were formed, and the sense of belonging to a supportive and understanding community was strengthened.

This initiative was made possible with the support of the Municipality of Amarante, which contributed to the organisation of various activities and welcome experiences, helping to make the week even more special for all participants.

Diaverum Portugal would like to thank APIR, the Municipality of Amarante, the Diaverum Amarante team, and all professionals involved, whose dedication and commitment made this programme possible once again.

Because we believe that caring also means creating opportunities to live life to the fullest, we will continue working to ensure that more and more people can discover that kidney disease does not have to put life on hold.

Because travelling is more than changing places, it is about continuing to live.
