Representatives from Diaverum recently took part in the European Kidney Patients’ Federation (EKPF) Annual Summit 2025 in Milan. The two-day gathering, held on 4–5 November, brought together kidney patient organisations, advocates and key stakeholders from across Europe to exchange knowledge, explore current challenges and align on joint advocacy priorities in kidney care.

EKPF serves as an umbrella organisation for kidney patient associations throughout Europe, with a clear focus on improving the health and quality of life of people living with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and those who care for them. While a large proportion of the community includes dialysis patients and kidney transplant recipients, EKPF’s remit also extends to people in earlier stages of kidney disease (pre-dialysis). Promoting the timely diagnosis of CKD is central to its mission.

Across the two days, the summit combined scientific presentations, the sharing of new research insights and a series of interactive workshops, alongside the EKPF Member Associations’ annual meeting. The programme once again highlighted the strength of the European kidney community when it comes together – exchanging experiences, offering mutual support and speaking with a united voice on behalf of people living with CKD.

Diaverum was honoured to contribute as an Official Sponsor of the summit. The company was represented by Elenor Mårtensson, Global Customer Manager for d.HOLIDAY, and Maria Chiara Durio, Country Managing Director for Diaverum Italy. During the event, Elenor delivered a session titled “d.HOLIDAY’s Journey to Empower Travel”, outlining Diaverum’s holistic approach to holiday dialysis and presenting the latest developments in the d.HOLIDAY Fly Back Programme.

Introducing the Fly Back Programme at the EKPF summit carried special meaning. The concept originated in dialogue with kidney patient associations during a previous d.HOLIDAY conference, where participants highlighted the need for structured support when a transplant call arrives during travel. Being able to share the expanded programme in front of that same community marked an important milestone.

Reflecting on the summit, Elenor noted that EKPF’s annual gathering has become a key moment in the d.HOLIDAY calendar – an opportunity to meet kidney patient associations from many different countries, exchange perspectives and find new ways to collaborate in growing the d.HOLIDAY offering. A shared ambition runs through these conversations: enabling more people on dialysis, and transplant recipients, to feel confident travelling and to enjoy the mobility and freedom that comes with it.

She also emphasised how inspiring it is to hear about the wide range of initiatives and projects being developed for patients and their families across Europe. This year felt particularly meaningful as she was able to share the news of the Fly Back Programme’s expansion – a development that responds directly to needs patient associations have repeatedly voiced.

In addition to EKPF leaders and member organisations, the summit hosted prominent figures from the wider kidney community, including Giuseppe Vanacore, President of ANED, the Italian National Association of Haemodialysis, Dialysis and Transplant Patients. Their participation underscored the importance of close cooperation between patient associations and care providers, and the value of spaces like the EKPF summit in deepening dialogue and building partnerships that can help shape the future of kidney care across Europe.
